History and Creation of the Department of Science Education

The Department of Science Education was established following a memorandum presented during the 40th meeting of the Senate of Anambra State University on January 10, 2008. This marked the official approval for the creation of the Faculty of Education, with a particular emphasis on Science Education. The department began its operations in the 2009/2010 academic session, launching various programs aimed at addressing the need for competent science educators.

Since its inception, the department has made significant strides in producing well-rounded graduates equipped with the knowledge, skills, and competencies required to tackle the challenges of teaching science, mathematics, and technology. The focus has been on developing teachers who are not only adept at classroom instruction but are also capable of conducting scientific research and contributing to the development of new technologies.

Admission Requirements

To gain admission into the B.Sc. Ed. program in Science Education, applicants must meet the following requirements:

  1. Age Requirement: All applicants must be at least 16 years old at the time of admission.
  2. Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME): Applicants must sit for the UTME and achieve a score that meets the requirements of the Faculty of Education and the university.
  3. O’Level Requirements: Applicants must have five credit passes in WASSCE, NECO, NABTEB, or GCE O’Level, including English Language, Mathematics, and three other subjects related to the chosen science education option.
  4. Direct Entry Requirements: In addition to the above requirements, direct entry students must have obtained the Nigerian Certificate in Education (NCE) from a recognized college of education in a relevant field.
