Dr. C.F. Okafor is the current Head of the Department of Science Education. The Department of Science Education stands as a pivotal institution dedicated to advancing the quality of education in Nigeria. Since its inception, the department has focused on producing competent, innovative, and passionate educators capable of driving scientific knowledge and technological advancement.

Established following a Senate memorandum on January 10, 2008, it officially commenced operations in the 2009/2010 academic session, beginning a journey toward academic excellence and research leadership.

History and Creation of the Department of Science Education

The Department of Science Education was established following a memorandum presented during the 40th meeting of the Senate of Anambra State University on January 10, 2008. This marked the official approval for the creation of the Faculty of Education, with a particular emphasis on Science Education.

The department began its operations in the 2009/2010 academic session, launching various programs aimed at addressing the need for competent science educators.

Since its inception, the department has made significant strides in producing well-rounded graduates equipped with the knowledge, skills, and competencies required to tackle the challenges of teaching science, mathematics, and technology. The focus has been on developing teachers who are not only adept at classroom instruction but are also capable of conducting scientific research and contributing to the development of new technologies.

Key Milestones and Achievements

  • Elevation of Education Standards: The department has played a pivotal role in raising the standard of education in Nigeria. Professors from the department serve as external examiners in other institutions, contributing their expertise to ensure quality standards in science education.
  • Participation in Competitions: Students of the department have participated in and won several science competitions, showcasing their knowledge and skills in various scientific fields. These competitions have not only provided a platform for students to demonstrate their abilities but have also helped elevate the department’s reputation nationally.
  • International Collaborations: The department has attracted several collaborations with renowned institutions worldwide. Through the efforts of its professors, the department has established ties with the Interdisciplinary Consortium African Conference Committee, collaborating with universities such as Kyambogo University in Uganda, University of Eldoret in Kenya, University of Makeni in Sierra Leone, Vincent Pol University in Poland, and the University of Ss Cyril and Methodius in Slovakia.
  • Local Organizing Committee: The department’s lecturers are heavily involved in local and international academic committees, ensuring that the department remains at the forefront of science education innovations and developments.

Moreover, the department has undergone three successful accreditations, covering the periods from 2014 to 2024. These accreditations are a testament to the department’s commitment to maintaining high academic standards and ensuring that its programs meet the rigorous requirements of regulatory bodies.

Academic Programs

Undergraduate Programs: The department offers a four-year degree program for regular students and a three-year degree program for direct entry students. Upon completion, students are awarded a Bachelor of Science in Education (B.Sc. Ed.) degree in various options within science education.

Postgraduate Programs: In addition to its undergraduate offerings, the department also offers Master of Science (M.Sc.) and Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) programs. These advanced degrees allow students to specialize in specific areas of science education, conduct in-depth research, and contribute to the academic community through scholarly publications and presentations.

Admission Requirements

To gain admission into the B.Sc. Ed. program in Science Education, applicants must meet the following requirements:

  • Age Requirement: All applicants must be at least 16 years old at the time of admission.
  • Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME): Applicants must sit for the UTME and achieve a score that meets the requirements of the Faculty of Education and the university.
  • O’Level Requirements: Applicants must have five credit passes in WASSCE, NECO, NABTEB, or GCE O’Level, including English Language, Mathematics, and three other subjects related to the chosen science education option.
  • Direct Entry Requirements: In addition, direct entry students must have obtained the Nigerian Certificate in Education (NCE) from a recognized college of education in a relevant field.
